Ohio’s DMV/BMV/Titling/Secretary of State....whatever they call it, is a nightmare. I’ve experienced Illinois and Michigan DMV’s, and Ohio just took the crown and scuttled away with it. For those who don’t get it, which I think is majority of you here, I’ve been coined the nickname Greasetank since college.
Why WOULDN’T you have Ohio Beef on your plate?
They have separate offices for titling and licensing. Luckily, the one near me are next door to each other. I had to first sit through the line to get a new state ID. Then had to sit through a separate line to get an out of state vehicle inspection. Then go to the other office to update the title. THEN go back to the first office to update the registration and tags. All of it took two days worth of waiting in lines and bouncing back and forth. But it was worth it to get these vanities.
Now I need the Ruckus registered. Ohio residents, are 50cc scooters considered regular motorcycles here? Would I need an endorsement or license? How picky are they with modifications?

I read it as great stink

You will need a motorcycle endorsement for the scooter. How picky they are about modifications depends on what you’ve done. If all the required lights are present, and you haven’t done anything to defeat any emissions equipment you shouldn’t have an issue.

Minnesota released a “state of the art” system to handle all DMV stuff called MNLARS & It is a complete piece of shit. its been over a year since I got a new car & they still haven’t been able to send me the title

Aftermarket muffler and intake is my biggest concern. Th engine is stock. All lighting is stock with the exception of LED bulbs in the headlights. The rest of the work is mostly cosmetic.

I’ ve also heard “Green Stank”. If only I was coined with a shorter name.

Titling is less of a nightmare than it used to be, and it’s still miles beyond absolutely anything to do with Pennsylvania or Taxachussets or New Hamster. No bitching will be tolerated. You didn’t have to spend 4 hours waiting only to be told that the person who can do titles is gone for the day, try again tomorrow.
The Ruckus SHOULD be registerable as a Moped if you don’t want to deal with motorcycle endorsement. 50cc and under IS MOPED, period. No separate endorsement required for Mopeds as long as you have a valid license. If you want motorcycle endorsement, you need a reciprocal license (state with Motorcycle endorsement) or you need to do the motor cycle training course.
The training courses in Ohio are state mandated, and legitimately good though. They cover the basics of motorcycle handling, plus obstacle avoidance, obstacle handling (stuff like branches in the road), and wet riding. Really good stuff for the money.
Also be prepared for your plate to be rejected. Because I immediately read it as ‘Great Stink.’ Depends on the strength of your explanation. SHUHALO was rejected initially, but approved with explanation. If the plate’s at ALL questionable, do it ON PAPER NOT ONLINE.

I guess I ne ver really knew how bad it was at othe r places. I want to keep it registered as a MOPED (although there’ s no pedals on scooters, so moped is the incorrect term) , that way I don’t have to get endorsed. I did the plate form all on paper. I wrote “Greasetank” in t he explanation. Hopefully that passes.

Massachusetts was pretty easy for me. Long line (apparently due to RealID changes meaning more people had to come in vs. do things online), but the R MV employees were the most friendly and helpful I’ve dealt with.

It’s going to depend on who does the registration, because technically the Ruckus is not a Moped under Ohio law - b ecause specifications say it goes more than 20MPH. But I don’t think it’ll be a big problem. Ohio just labels ‘em all under ‘Moped,’ including scooters.

Explanation is... subjective as hell. So, it may be enough, it may not be enough. Just saying ‘Greasetank’ might not be enough, but it might be fine. I had to basically spell out that ‘SHUHALO is from World of Warcraft, and is Tauren for Tauren.’

Taxachussets has always been a total shitshow. The “RealID” line is pure bullshit. I had to wait in line for four fucking hours only to be told “oh, you have to go to a different office.”
Then I had to spend three goddamn hours in a terrifyingly overcrowded office in Boston (seriously, the fire marshal should have been called.)
And that was the LEAST unpleasant part of it. Before the ‘oh yeah, we tax cars 3+ times minimum’ bullshit.

So Ohio’s definition of a motorized bicycle (the actual legal term for a moped) boils down to:
20 mph max on a level surface
1 hp max, 50 cc max
Must have pedals
The specific model must be on a list of approved models
For Honda, that’s the Cruiser 25CC, the Hobbit, and the PA 50.
A Ruckus is a full-blown motorcycle in Ohio. The only thing separating it from, say, a Ninja H2, legally, is the fact that it has 4.3 hp, which is less than 5 hp, meaning it can’t use limited access freeways.
